Module 2 Unit 3 Reading

The curse of the mummy

Teaching aims:

1.       Help students learn to predict information in advance.

2.       Help students learn something about Howard Carter and his discovery.

3.       Try some new methods of teaching reading.

 

Teaching approaches:

Multi-media, group work, pair work

 

Teaching procedure:

Step 1 Lead-in

1. Picture Flash

Show four pictures quickly and ask students to use one word to describe what they have seen. (get the word “mummy”)

 

2. Brainstorming

When talking about mummy, what will you think of?

Step 2 Reading

1. Howard Carter

Ask students to read the first piece of paper I give them and answer three questions to learn something about Howard Carter.

1)      What kind of person is Howard Carter?

2)      What was his most amazing discovery of all?

3)      What’s the result of the discovery?

 

2. Something mysterious

1)      Guess what would happen after they got so much from the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

2)      Reading jigsaw: Work in pairs. Two students read different paragraphs and tell each other what they have read in English. Students need to remember as much information as they can and pay attention the relationship between the characters.

3)      Feedback: List all the mysterious things in key words in the form of diagram on the blackboard.

 

3.  Reasons for the mystery

1)      Give one of the reasons, that is, the curse of the mummy, and say something about the original words of the curse.

2)      Read the last piece of paper to get the other two reasons mentioned in the passage.

Step 3 Summary

1.       Summarize the structure of the passage. (List the structure ahead in the process of the reading.)

 

2.       Ask students to write the summary of the passage.

 

3.       Ask students to change the summary into a free style poem. (T gives an example first and also gives the key words)
